CARLTON WALKWAYS
The project involved upgrading two existing City of Winnipeg skywalks on Carlton Street in downtown Winnipeg, Manitoba. One skywalk connects the RBC Convention Centre to the Delta Hotels by Marriott Winnipeg at 185 Carlton Street, while the second connects the Convention Centre to an 18-storey office building at 155 Carlton Street. Together, these skywalks form part of Winnipeg’s elevated, enclosed pedestrian network that links building users to the downtown core.
The original walkway cladding had reached the end of its service life, with failing precast concrete panels posing public safety concerns. The scope of work included a complete envelope retrofit, consisting of replacement of the existing cladding with a curtain wall system, new roofing, updated soffit finishes, mechanical and electrical upgrades, and accessibility improvements.
A single design solution was developed for both skywalks, resulting in an economical and cohesive approach that emphasized transparency and visual connection to the exterior. Replacing the solid precast panels with floor-to-ceiling curtain wall introduced abundant natural light, improved visibility along the skywalks, enhanced public safety, and opened views to the surrounding urban context.
